Past Hunger Games - 50th Hunger Games - poison paradise
The 50th annual Hunger Games, or 2nd Quarter Quell, took place in a ‘poison paradise’, where everything was brightly colored and dangerous. Everything but the rainwater was ultimately fatal, including the butterflies, stream water, birds, and flowers. During the 2nd Quarter Quell, there were 48 tributes reaped instead of 24, making the career pack twice as large. Haymitch Abernathy managed to get a knife from the cornucopia, and used it to take out 2 career tributes before nearly being killed by another. Maysilee Donner, another tribute from District 12, saved Haymitch and the two formed a temporary alliance. Haymitch and Maysilee traveled to the edge of the arena, hoping to find something, but only discovering the force field. Shortly after, the two went their separate ways because there were only a few tributes remaining. Maysliee was soon killed by a flock of vicious pink birds, but Haymitch managed to make it to the end, with only one other tribute remaining. The girl, a career, and Haymitch fought viciously, before Haymitch led her to the edge of the arena, tricking her into throwing an ax, which bounced back and embedded in her skull, leaving Haymitch the victor. After his games, Haymitch’s family and girlfriend mysteriously died in what can only be assumed as the Capitol’s revenge against Haymitch for his stunt with the force field. Haymitch became a drunk, and spent the next 24 years mentoring the children of District 12, none of which survived until the 74th Hunger Games. Although Haymitch was reaped into the 3rd Quarter Quell, Peeta Mellark took his place in the games.
I didn’t just cry at that part of Tangled, I wept. Seriously. We’re not talking, “Oh, my eyes are a little moist”…we’re talking full on tears streaming down my face as my body shakes with the sobbing.
